Picking the right mattress doesn’t have to be difficult, yet it sometimes feels that way. When looking for a mattress that meets your needs and promises a good night’s sleep, just follow these three easy steps.
Step 1: Determine Your Preferred Firmness
Before shopping, decide whether you need a soft or firm mattress. Generally, side sleepers benefit from softer mattresses for better pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers require medium to firm mattresses for adequate support.A mattress should offer firm support, not just a firm feel. Inadequate support can lead to discomfort and poor sleep quality.
Step 2: Set a Budget
Determine your budget before starting your search. Remember, investing in a quality mattress is investing in your health, as you spend about a third of your life sleeping. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, higher-quality mattresses often provide better comfort and durability. Online retailers often offer high-quality mattresses at lower prices than traditional stores due to reduced overhead costs.
Step 3: Choose the Right Type of Mattress
There are three main types of mattresses: innerspring, foam, and hybrid.
Innerspring Mattresses: These are durable, affordable, and provide good airflow, making them suitable for those who want a cooler sleep. Look for models with modern pocket springs for better support.
Foam Mattresses: These include latex and memory foam. Latex mattresses are durable and responsive, while memory foam mattresses offer superior comfort by contouring to your body. Higher-quality foams reduce issues like sagging and heat retention.
Hybrid Mattresses: Combining the benefits of innerspring and foam, hybrid mattresses provide excellent support and comfort. Ensure the hybrid mattress has at least 7-8 cm of foam for optimal comfort and support.
Personally, I think hybrid mattresses meet most needs, as they offer the best of both worlds. I own a Deep Dream mattress, and by far, it has provided the best sleep and value.
